Ten Reasons Two Nurses Chose Planned Homebirth – A Testimonial

I have had two patients who experienced the joys of homebirth – both of whom are nurses in their own profession – who wrote up their 10 reasons for why they chose homebirth.

  1. Homebirth offers a level of control and freedom of choice that cannot be achieved with traditional prenatal care or hospital birth.
    • Control over medical decisions without feeling pressured, but still being educated.
    • Control over body positioning and comfort measures labor.
    • Control over environment including location, lighting, temperature, music, visitors, etc.
    • Autonomy to choose the prenatal and infant testing and procedures that are important to you based on your needs without feeling pressured.
    • Control over treatment of placenta.
  2. Reduced chance of potentially dangerous and/or unnecessary medical interventions such as induction, forceps, episiotomy, and caesarian-section.
  3. Ability to experience the natural sensations and feelings associated with birth to allow the body to appropriately release chemicals and hormones in response to those sensations.
    • Allows the mother to feel more connected to the birth experience.
    • Fully experience the emotions of childbirth.
  4. Reduced risk of hospital acquired infection for mom and baby.
  5. Ability to give birth in a relaxing environment surrounded by supportive and loving people of your choice.
    • Small, committed team of professionals dedicated to your care throughout the entire pregnancy and labor.
    • Increased safety due to continuity of care.
    • As many or few family and friends as you desire.
  6. Freedom to eat, drink, and move throughout labor freely.
  7. Ability to connect with your pregnancy and labor on a more emotional, spiritual, and physical level.
  8. A chance to challenge yourself and test the limits of your body, while experiencing birth the way it has been done throughout time.
  9. Freedom to choose delayed chord clamping, immediate skin to skin contact, and early breast feeding.
  10. Increased ease of bonding for the whole family. Plus, no waiting for discharge!

Just as a woman's heart knows how and when to pump, her lungs to inhale, and her hand to pull back from fire, so she knows when and how to give birth. ~ Virginia Di Orio
